Josh Robinson

Josh is a passionate choir leader, voice teacher, and performance coach, dedicated to helping singers find their voice with confidence and joy. In 2019, he co-founded Encore Choirs with his wife, Gemma Robinson, and has loved watching the community grow into a vibrant and welcoming space where anyone can experience the power of singing together.

Josh pursued Voice Studies and Performing Arts at the University of Winchester, diving deep into vocal function, healthy technique, and the art of teaching singing. Having sung in choirs from a young age, his passion truly took flight at university when he began directing Resonance, a lower-voice ensemble. It was here he discovered the joy (and challenge!) of leading choirs—and he’s never looked back.

Always keen to learn more, Josh continues to train alongside leading experts in vocal pedagogy, bringing the latest insights into his sessions. He firmly believes that singing is a unique form of expression and communication, and he thrives on helping singers—both in choirs and one-on-one—unlock their vocal freedom.

Alongside his work with Encore, Josh also leads the University of Winchester Show Choir (hosted by the Music Centre) and a community singing group for the charity Headway—bringing music and connection to even more people.

Josh’s performance credits range from the classical to the quirky, including Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 (Canterbury Cathedral), Rutter’s Magnificat and Gloria! (Winchester Cathedral), Chilcott’s Salisbury Vespers (Leeds Cathedral), Berlioz’s Grande Messe des morts (Birmingham Symphony Hall), Twinwoods Festival with the Bedfordshire Big Band—and yes, that really was him singing in a 2008 Birdseye TV advert!

Josh looks forward to every rehearsal and thanks his choir members for bringing such brilliant energy each week—they’re the reason running choirs is so rewarding. He’s excited for what the future holds and always ready to welcome new voices into the Encore family.

Alfie Hickson

Alfie is the resident pianist for Encore Choirs, known for bringing his vibrant energy, musical creativity, and a great sense of humour to every session—especially when bouncing off choir leader Josh! With a flair for turning accompaniment into artistry, Alfie adds a unique groove and personality to the Encore sound.

He studied Music Performance and Production at the University of Winchester, where he honed his skills in everything from jazz ensemble accompaniment to film scoring. His love for collaborative and creatively-charged projects shines through in every rehearsal and performance.

Never one to stick strictly to the script, Alfie brings a distinctive, expressive style to his playing—adding colour, rhythm, and a whole lot of character. He’s also a talented songwriter, regularly performing his original works with authenticity and soul.

In addition to his work with Encore, Alfie is the pianist for the University of Winchester’s Show Choir, where his musicality continues to elevate every performance. Whether he’s underscoring a soaring ballad or locking into a pop groove, Alfie’s passion for music—and for making it fun—is always centre stage.
