The Stress-Relieving Power of Group Singing

Life can be busy and demanding, and it is not always easy to find time to relax and recharge. Many people are now looking for activities that help them switch off from daily pressures while also doing something enjoyable and social. One activity that continues to grow in popularity is group singing. Taking part in a pop and rock choir that also performs musical theatre, contemporary favourites and a wide range of other styles can be a surprisingly powerful way to relieve stress, boost mood and feel more connected to others.

Why Singing Helps Reduce Stress

Singing has long been linked with positive wellbeing benefits. When people sing, their bodies release endorphins, which are natural chemicals that help improve mood and reduce feelings of stress. Singing also encourages deeper breathing, which helps calm the body and mind. This combination of breathing, music and movement can help create a sense of relaxation that many people find refreshing after a long day.

Focusing on music also helps the mind step away from everyday worries. During a rehearsal, attention shifts to melody, rhythm and harmony rather than work, chores or responsibilities. Even spending a short time singing can create a noticeable lift in mood.

The Power of Singing Together

Group singing takes these benefits even further. When voices come together, something special happens. The shared experience of singing the same song at the same time creates a sense of connection and belonging. Instead of focusing on everyday worries, your attention shifts to the music, the rhythm and the energy of the group. Even a single rehearsal can leave people feeling lighter and more positive.

For many adults, choir rehearsals become something to look forward to each week. It is a chance to step away from routines, enjoy familiar songs and spend time with others who share the same interest. Singing together often brings laughter, encouragement and a relaxed atmosphere where everyone can simply enjoy the moment.

Building Confidence Through Music

Another benefit of singing in a choir is the boost it can give to confidence. Many people believe they cannot sing or worry about how their voice might sound. However, choir environments are designed to be supportive and encouraging.

A choir focuses on enjoyment rather than perfection. You do not need to read music or have formal singing experience. By singing alongside others, individuals often feel more comfortable and begin to grow in confidence over time.

Learning new songs and hearing harmonies come together can also create a strong sense of achievement. The progress that comes with each rehearsal can be incredibly rewarding and motivating.

The Social Side of Choirs

Choirs are not just about music. They also create opportunities to meet new people and build friendships. Rehearsals provide a welcoming space where people can relax, chat and share a positive experience together.

This sense of community is one reason why so many people search online for ways to join a choir near me. A choir can become a regular social highlight, offering both musical enjoyment and meaningful connection with others.

The shared experience of singing together helps people feel part of something bigger, creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere for everyone involved.

Music That Lifts Your Mood

The type of music sung in a choir can also make a big difference. A pop and rock choir often brings together well-known songs that people recognise and enjoy, while also exploring musical theatre, contemporary favourites and a variety of other uplifting styles. Singing familiar tracks often creates a lively and uplifting atmosphere that makes rehearsals feel fun and energising.

Pop and rock music naturally encourages expression and enthusiasm, helping singers feel relaxed and engaged. Hearing the group sound come together during a song can be a powerful and uplifting moment for everyone in the room.

Trying Choir for the First Time

If you have never sung in a choir before, trying something new might feel slightly daunting. The good news is that there are easy ways to experience choir singing without any pressure.

A free choir taster session is a great way to see what a rehearsal is like. It gives you the chance to meet the group, try singing a few songs and experience the friendly atmosphere before deciding whether to join regularly.

Many people find that once they attend a rehearsal, they quickly feel comfortable and enjoy the experience far more than they expected.

Experience the Joy of Singing Together

Founded in 2019, Encore Choirs brings people together through a shared love of singing, creating uplifting musical experiences that welcome everyone, regardless of background or ability. Why Choir Singing Is Growing in Popularity Across Winchester & Hampshire

If you’ve noticed more people talking about singing groups, community choirs or looking to join a choir in Winchester, you’re not imagining it. Choir singing in Winchester has been growing steadily, and we see it first hand every week at Encore Choirs.

So why now? Why are so many people, of all ages and backgrounds, finding their way into choir rooms across the city? The reasons are simple, human and long overdue.

People are craving real connection

Life is busy. Many of us spend our days staring at screens, commuting, juggling work, family and endless to do lists. Choir rehearsals offer something different. They give people a reason to leave the house, put their phone away and connect with others in real life.

When you sing in a group, you’re working together towards something shared. You breathe together, listen to one another and create something bigger than yourself. That sense of belonging is powerful. For many of our members, choir is the one evening in the week that feels just for them.

Singing is good for your wellbeing

More people are talking openly about mental health, stress and burnout. Singing has been shown to help reduce stress, improve mood and boost confidence. You don’t need to know the science to feel it. After a good sing, people leave rehearsal standing taller, smiling more and feeling lighter.

Choir singing in Winchester is becoming a popular way to look after yourself without pressure. There’s no need to be perfect. You just show up, sing and enjoy the moment. For many, it’s a form of self care that actually feels fun.

No auditions means no fear

One of the biggest reasons people don’t think they can sing is fear. Fear of being judged, fear of getting it wrong, fear of auditions. We hear it all the time. “I love singing, but I’m not very good.”

At Encore, we believe everyone can sing. Our choirs are open to all abilities, with no auditions and no need to read music. That makes a huge difference. When the pressure is gone, people relax. When people relax, they sing better. Confidence grows naturally, not because someone tells you to be confident, but because you feel safe enough to try.

This welcoming approach is one reason more people are choosing to join a choir in Winchester now than ever before.

Music brings joy in uncertain times

The world has felt uncertain for a while. In times like these, people turn to things that feel grounding and uplifting. Singing together does exactly that. It’s joyful, energising and deeply human.

Choirs across Winchester are choosing music that lifts spirits, sparks memories and gets people smiling. You don’t need to be a professional singer to feel the joy of harmonising with others. You just need to be willing to give it a go.

It’s about people, not performance

Many modern choirs are shifting away from the idea that everything must lead to a big performance. While concerts can be exciting, the real magic happens in the weekly rehearsals. The laughs, the shared cups of tea, the quiet moments when a song suddenly clicks.

At Encore Choirs, we focus on the experience, not perfection. Our members come for many reasons. Some want to build confidence. Some want to make new friends. Some simply love singing uplifting music at the end of a long day. All of those reasons are valid.

This relaxed approach makes choir singing in Winchester feel accessible rather than intimidating.

Winchester has a strong sense of community

Winchester is a city that values community. From local markets to clubs and societies, people here like being part of something. Choirs fit naturally into that culture.

When you join a choir, you’re not just learning songs. You’re becoming part of a group that supports each other. We see friendships form, people car share to rehearsals and members cheering each other on in everyday life. That sense of togetherness keeps people coming back.

It’s never too late to start

Another reason choir singing is growing is that people are realising it’s never too late. You don’t need years of training. You don’t need to have sung since school. Many of our members hadn’t sung out loud in years before joining Encore.

All you need is curiosity and a willingness to try. Your voice is welcome exactly as it is.

Find your voice with Encore Choirs

If you’ve been thinking about singing again, or trying something new, now is a great time to join a choir in Winchester. At Encore, we’re an inclusive, friendly and welcoming community of choirs across Hampshire. We’re open to all abilities, with no auditions and no need to read music.

Whether you’re looking to build confidence, make new friends or simply enjoy singing uplifting music, Encore is the perfect place to find your voice.

Come along, sing with us and see how it feels. We’d love to welcome you.

Choir for Beginners: Common Myths That Put Adults Off Singing

If you have ever thought about singing in a choir but talked yourself out of it, you are not alone. We meet so many adults at Encore Choirs who say they have always loved music but believed choirs were not for them. Often it comes down to a few common myths that can feel very real, especially if you have not sung since school.

So let us gently bust those myths and show you what singing with us is really like. If you are curious about choir for beginners, this is for you.

Myth one: I cannot sing

This is the biggest one. Many adults believe singing is a talent you either have or you do not. Usually this belief started with one comment years ago or a memory of being asked to mime in assembly.

At Encore, we believe everyone can sing. Singing is a skill, not a special gift reserved for a few. Our choir leaders teach everything by ear and guide you step by step. No one is put on the spot and no one is judged. Over time, confidence grows naturally. We see it happen every term.

Myth two: Choirs are only for confident performers

Some people imagine choirs as formal groups standing still, reading music and singing perfectly in harmony. That can feel intimidating if you are shy or new.

Our choirs are relaxed, friendly and informal. There is plenty of laughter, encouragement and shared moments of learning. You can stand where you feel comfortable, sing as loudly or quietly as you like and simply enjoy being part of the sound. Many of our members tell us choir is the one place they feel able to be themselves.

Myth three: I need to read music

This is one of the most common worries we hear. The good news is you do not need to read music at all to sing with Encore.

We teach songs by listening and repeating. Everything is broken down into small, manageable parts. Lyrics are provided and recordings are often shared to help you practise at home if you want to. Many members arrive convinced they cannot read music and leave wondering why they ever worried about it.

Myth four: Everyone else will be better than me

Walking into a room full of strangers can feel daunting, especially if you think everyone else knows what they are doing. In reality, many people in the room will be feeling exactly the same as you.

Encore Choirs are made up of adults of all ages and backgrounds. Some have sung before, others have not sung since school. What they share is a love of music and a willingness to give it a go. There is no competition and no pressure to be perfect. We celebrate progress, not perfection.

Myth five: I am too old to start singing

We hear this a lot and it always makes us smile. There is no age limit on singing. Voices change and develop throughout life, and singing can be started at any age.

Many of our members join later in life and say they wish they had done it sooner. Singing together can boost mood, improve breathing and create a real sense of belonging. It is never too late to try something new that brings joy.

Myth six: Choirs are serious and strict

If your image of choir includes long rehearsals and stern conductors, you may be pleasantly surprised by Encore. While we take care to help our members sound good, the focus is always on enjoyment.

Rehearsals are uplifting and social. We sing feel good songs and aim to leave everyone feeling lighter than when they arrived. There is structure, but it is gentle and supportive rather than rigid.

What choir for beginners really looks like at Encore

A typical Encore rehearsal starts with a warm welcome. We warm up together, have a chat and then dive into singing. Mistakes are part of learning and often part of the fun. You are never singled out and there is no audition at any stage.

Our choirs across Hampshire are inclusive and welcoming. You can come along on your own or with a friend. Many people make lasting friendships through choir and enjoy having something in the week that is just for them.

We also offer free taster sessions so you can try it out with no pressure. It is a great way to see if the vibe feels right for you. Most people leave smiling and surprised by how much they enjoyed it.

A Christmas Jingle: A Heartfelt Performance That Made a Difference

A Christmas Jingle: A Heartfelt Performance That Made a Difference

A Festive Evening to Remember

Encore Choirs returned this December to the beautiful St Peter’s Church in Petersfield with our latest Christmas show, A Christmas Jingle: an evening with Encore Choirs — and what a night it was. Led by our musical director Josh Robinson, the whole evening captured everything we love about being part of a fun, welcoming community choir in Hampshire. With singers from our Hampshire and Surrey choirs (Alton, Nyewood and Wickham) coming together, the church was filled with festive cheer, laughter and a real buzz.

You can listen to Petersfield’s Shine Radio

A Completely Sold Out Venue

We could not have been more excited to walk out to a full house. St Peter’s Church was completely sold out, and from the very first note, the energy in the room was incredible. Friends, family and supporters packed the venue, ready for a night of joyful Christmas music and uplifting performances.

Local Radio Comes to Join the Fun

Adding to the excitement, local radio station Shine Radio came along to experience the concert and capture the atmosphere. They spoke to members of Encore Choirs, musicians from our six piece band and Jo Dallas from Headway. Their coverage beautifully reflects the heart of the evening and the community spirit behind the event.

Singing for a Cause

This year’s Christmas concert had an extra special purpose. We were raising money for Headway, the UK charity that supports people rebuilding their lives after a brain injury. Their work helps individuals and families find hope, confidence and community again, and we were honoured to support such a meaningful cause.
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of everyone who joined us, we raised a fantastic £1,572.85 for Headway Portsmouth and South East Hampshire. Every penny will go directly towards supporting their service users.

A Night of Music, Variety and Festive Fun

Accompanied by a brilliant six piece band (drums, keys, accordion, viola, bass and guitar), Encore Choirs performed 19 songs ranging from Christmas classics to popular hits and even a Les Misérables medley that had the audience buzzing. One of the joys of being part of a local choir in Hampshire is getting to perform such a wide range of music, and this concert truly showed how much our singers love bringing these songs to life.

A Very Special Debut: The Headway Choir

One of the standout moments of the entire evening was the debut performance of the Headway Choir, also led by Josh. Launched in January, the choir meets once a week and has become a safe, uplifting space for individuals with an acquired brain injury to experience the joy of singing together. The progress, confidence and sense of community that has developed within the group has been inspiring to watch.

Their performances of Bridge Over Troubled Water and You Raise Me Up were incredibly moving. Many in the audience were visibly emotional as the Headway Choir took to the stage for the first time. The applause that followed was warm, heartfelt and well deserved.

A Beautiful Collaboration

To wrap up the first half, both choirs joined together to perform At Christmas, an original song by Gina Hall. We were thrilled to welcome Gina to the piano for this special moment, adding a personal and magical touch to the performance.

A Night Filled with Love, Laughter and Community

A Christmas Jingle will definitely go down as one of our most memorable concerts. The atmosphere, the music, the togetherness and the generosity of our wonderful community made the night incredibly special. We’re so grateful to everyone who supported the event — our singers, our musicians, our volunteers and of course our amazing audience.

Join Us in the New Year

Encore Choirs will continue spreading joy through singing as we head into a new year of music, connection and community. If you’re looking to join a friendly community choir in Hampshire or Portsmouth, we’d love for you to come along and get involved. There’s always room for more voices in the Encore family.

How Singing in a Choir Strengthens Your Social Life

At Encore Choirs we see it every week. People walk into a rehearsal a little unsure, often on their own, and before long they are laughing, chatting, singing their hearts out and leaving with new friends. Music has a special way of bringing people together. When you join a choir, you are not just learning songs. You are stepping into a warm, welcoming community where friendships grow naturally and confidence gets a boost in every rehearsal.

If you have ever thought about joining singing choirs, wondered whether a choir for beginners is right for you, or felt drawn to join adult choir groups in your area, this is your sign. Choirs are one of the most powerful social spaces you can be part of, and the benefits reach far beyond music.

Below we explore why singing in a choir can transform your social life and how we nurture that sense of community here at Encore.

  1. Making Friends Without the Awkward Small Talk

One of the hardest parts of meeting new people is breaking the ice. A choir solves that instantly. You are all there for the same purpose. You share a love of music, a curiosity to try something new, or simply a desire to get out of the house and do something fun.

At Encore, we see friendships form effortlessly. Maybe you both struggle with the same harmony. Maybe you laugh together over a tricky rhythm. Maybe you end up standing next to someone who becomes a familiar friendly face each week. The point is you do not have to force anything. The music does the work.

For those who are shy or nervous, this can be life changing. You can be part of the group without pressure to perform socially. Over time, confidence builds and conversation becomes easier, because the people around you feel like teammates rather than strangers.

  1. Building a Genuine Sense of Community

We are an ever-growing family sharing our community spirit, combining the gift of music and passion for singing. At Encore we believe that everyone can sing and everyone deserves a place to feel they belong. That is why we welcome all abilities and have no auditions and no need to read music. You simply show up, breathe, and join the sound.

A choir is a community in motion. You rehearse together, improve together and celebrate each performance as a shared achievement. People support one another. They notice when someone has been missing and they cheer when someone nails a part they once struggled with. It creates a web of small moments that add up to a strong sense of belonging.

Our all-inclusive membership means you can attend our community choir in Alton, our community choir in Wickham or our community choir in Petersfield whenever it suits you. This flexibility helps members form connections across different groups and get to know even more people. It keeps the community vibrant and full of fresh energy.

  1. Networking Through Music Without It Feeling Like Networking

Networking often sounds formal or tiring but in a choir it happens naturally. People from all walks of life come together. Different backgrounds, different careers, different interests but united by music.

You might meet someone who shares your line of work. You might connect with someone who has skills you need or find yourself chatting to someone who opens doors you never expected. Choir networking is gentle and genuine. First you become singing buddies. Later those friendships organically turn into valuable connections.

Encore members often tell us they have found work opportunities, creative collaborations and new social circles through the choir. It is amazing what can grow from a simple conversation during a rehearsal break.

  1. Boosting Wellbeing and Confidence Together

Confidence grows faster when you are surrounded by supportive people who celebrate your wins. Our rehearsals are fun, vibrant and full of uplifting music from Pop and Rock classics to Musical Theatre favourites. Even on days when life feels heavy, singing with others can lift your mood and fill you with energy.

The shared experience of learning a new song or performing at a local event creates a strong bond. There is something powerful about standing side by side with others and giving your voice to something bigger than yourself. You feel part of a team and that feeling often spills into everyday life.

We rehearse during term times and offer exciting opportunities to perform throughout the year at local events, festivals and seasonal concerts. Each performance becomes a shared memory that strengthens friendships. You look back together and think We did that. And that sense of achievement lasts long after the applause fades.

  1. A Safe Space to Be Yourself

One of the things people love most about Encore is the relaxed, judgement free environment. Many of our members had never sung before joining. Some were looking to rebuild confidence. Others were simply looking for a space to breathe and disconnect from the stress of daily life.

A choir gives you permission to be exactly who you are. You are not expected to be perfect. You are not expected to know anything before you arrive. You come as you are and grow at your own pace. When you feel safe and supported, social connections become much easier. Walls come down. Laughter comes easier. And friendships become meaningful.

Our free taster sessions are a great way to dip your toe in and see this for yourself.

Singing in a choir offers more than music. It gives you community, connection and a place where friendships grow naturally. If you are looking to make friends, feel more confident and be part of something joyful, Encore Choirs is waiting for you.

Encore Choirs Sings for the Royal Navy’s Christmas Advert 2025 – Out Today (03/12)

Encore Choirs Sings for the Royal Navy’s Christmas Advert 2025 – Out Today (03/12)

Encore Choirs is beyond excited to share some truly incredible news: we are the featured choir in the Royal Navy’s brand-new Christmas advert for 2025, released today.

When the call came asking if Encore Choirs would like to provide the vocal underscore for this year’s campaign, we were absolutely thrilled. As a community choir made up of passionate singers from our groups across the South, it was an honour we could never have imagined.

A Story Inspired by True Events

The advert, Silent Night: On the Frontline, is a powerful and emotional film based on real Royal Navy operations. It follows a Type 45 Air Defence Destroyer on active duty on Christmas Eve, depicting the intense moments leading up to a real drone threat. The ship’s company responds with their Sea Viper Ballistic Missile system, preventing catastrophe in a gripping and heroic act.

The message is simple, moving, and deeply resonant:
Sometimes, you sacrifice the moments that matter the most—so others can hold on to theirs.

Encore Choirs on Set

With just 48 hours’ notice, a small group of singers from three of our adult singing groups stepped forward to help bring this story to life. After arriving on location, we filmed several scenes and recorded our arrangement of Silent Night.

A special congratulations goes to our wonderful soloist, Ginny, who delivered the beautiful and heart-warming opening solo – we are so proud of you.

Moments like these remind us why being part of a local choir and a supportive musical community means so much. Whether you sing for joy, confidence, community, or creativity, opportunities like this show how powerful choir singing can be.

Community choir in Winchester: Encore Choirs welcomes new singers this autumn

Encore Choirs is thrilled to celebrate the successful launch of its fourth branch—right in the heart of Winchester, Hampshire. In a heart-warming twist, this new chapter continues the legacy of Winchester Sings, a beloved community choir that brought joy to local singers for many years under the dedicated leadership of local musician Nigel.

From Uncertainty to a Thriving New Chapter

Earlier this year, the future of Winchester Sings looked uncertain, with the possibility that the choir might sadly close its doors. This potential closure was covered in the local press — for example, the Hampshire Chronicle ran a story titled “Hampshire choir saved from closure as musical group steps in”, highlighting how the choir was at risk but then rescued.

Encore Choirs stepped in to keep the music alive, ensuring the community could continue to meet, laugh, and sing together. Choir leader Josh Robinson met the Winchester Sings singers during their final session and led a taster rehearsal over the summer. The chemistry was instant.

“It felt like a perfect match to work with such a vibrant group,” Josh said.

In September, Encore Choirs (Winchester) officially began its weekly rehearsals. Sessions are held on Thursday evenings, 7.15–9.15pm, during term time at Vineyard Church, Winchester, and the group is already growing in numbers and energy.

A Choir for Everyone

Encore Choirs already runs thriving groups across Hampshire and beyond. Their mission is simple: to make singing accessible, uplifting, and fun.

  • ✅ No auditions required

  • 🎼 No need to read music

  • 🎤 No pressure to perform — unless you want to!

Rehearsals are warm, relaxed, and full of laughter — often with a cup of tea and the occasional slice of cake. For those who do want to perform, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the year.

Josh Robinson, who leads all Encore Choirs groups, is passionate about the power of song to bring people together:

“Singing in a group lifts the spirit like nothing else. Encore is about community, connection, and the simple joy of making music together.”

Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future

As the Winchester singers join the Encore Choirs family, the team extends warm wishes to Nigel and his wife Jo as they embark on their next chapter. Encore Choirs is excited to carry forward the sense of family and togetherness that Winchester Sings built over the years.

Come and Sing With Us

The Winchester choir is now up and running, and new members are warmly welcome to join. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just love to sing in the shower, everyone will find a place in this friendly, inclusive, and uplifting community choir.

Master your voice: proven techniques for singing with encore choirs

If you’ve ever dreamed of improving your singing voice, gaining confidence, and connecting with like-minded people, you’re not alone.

At Encore Choirs, we believe that everyone has the potential to sing – and with the right techniques, guidance, and community support, your voice can flourish.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning to singing after years away, our choirs offer a welcoming, inclusive space where you can develop your skills and have fun while doing it.

Unlock Your Potential with Proven Singing Techniques

Singing isn’t just about hitting the right notes; it’s about expression, breathing, posture, resonance and confidence.

At Encore Choirs, we use proven techniques for singing that are designed to support your vocal development, step by step.

A few of the key areas we focus on include:

Breath Control

One of the first things our experienced instructor will work on with you is breath control.  Many people underestimate the importance of efficient breathing when singing. It’s not just about inhaling and exhaling – it’s about what parts of the body we can use to support breath balance and where the effort needs to be placed. In addition, it’s about where you can place the breath in a song to get the best from your voice. Too much air intake and you can overpressurise the system, not enough air and you risk not getting to the end of your phrase.

Myth: ‘Sing from your diaphragm’ is often a term used to describe singing properly, but what does this mean?

The diaphragm is a muscle whose function is to draw our air in, not push it out – therefore,  when we sing (which is on an exhale) the diaphragm has no control of our air.

To help aid an efficient breathing technique, we encourage our abdominal wall to release on the in-breath and to gently draw in towards our spine on the out-breath. This serves two main purposes: the first is that it stops us from taking a high breath into our chest, which can cause too much pressure around our voice (known as subglottic pressure), keeping us way more relaxed with less tension. The second is that we can therefore control the airflow in a much more efficient way by gently guiding the air out. One way to think of this is when you are icing a cake with a piping bag: squeeze too hard and too much pressure builds and leaves a mess, too little and you do not get an even amount of icing – so it’s all about balance.

Through targeted breathing exercises, you’ll learn how to control your airflow, build your vocal stamina, and reduce tension and strain. Our sessions focus on gentle, progressive practice so you can improve at your own pace – and all in a friendly, non-judgemental environment.

Posture & Alignment

How you hold your body directly affects how your voice sounds. A slouched posture can restrict airflow and limit your vocal range, which is why, at Encore Choirs, our sessions start with warm-ups that include body alignment techniques to help you become more aware of your posture.

Self-awareness is paramount. Each of our bodies is different, and we all have a different optimal position for our bodies and singing. Try singing and moving your head into different positions by gently moving your head forwards and backwards – you’ll hear your sound change as you do this. You’ll find a ‘sweet spot’ where the voice comes out more effortlessly and will feel like it rings out.

Our leader, Josh, will also guide you through stretches and positioning exercises that open  up your chest, align your spine, and support a free, natural vocal sound. This not only  improves your singing but can also have benefits for your overall wellbeing.

Pitch & Tone Development

Singing in tune is a skill that can absolutely be developed, and at Encore Choirs we excel in  making this a fun and accessible process. Using simple but effective group listening exercises, you’ll learn to hear and reproduce pitch accurately.

Our leader uses call-and-response techniques, harmony work, and real-time feedback to  help you build your pitch accuracy and tone control. Before long, you’ll find yourself singing  in harmony with others, which is a truly uplifting experience that’s hard to beat.

Vocal Warm-Ups and Range Building

Singers are vocal athletes! Like athletic runners, they will stretch before a run, singers need  to warm up their voices before a performance. Each of our sessions, at Encore Choirs,  begins with structured warm-ups that are designed to gently extend your vocal range and  prepare your voice for the session ahead.

These warm-ups are fun and varied; from tongue twisters to melodic scales; and are suitable  for all levels. You’ll notice a marked improvement in your voice’s flexibility, vocal strength,  and confidence over time. Not only this, it helps you get through each session without feeling  fatigued.

Articulation and Expression

Being able to convey emotion through song is one of the most powerful aspects of singing,  and we believe it to be the most important form of self-expression. Therefore, we have  dedicated ourselves to creating a space where singing is not just a technical skill, but a way  for you to bring songs to life through expression, articulation, and interpretation, no matter  your ability.

Articulation is all about the efficiency of our tongue, where do we place certain words and  how to communicate clearly.

Our leader Josh offers guidance on dynamics, phrasing, and stylistic delivery, all while  encouraging your own personal expression. You’ll learn how to shape a performance that  truly connects with an audience whether that audience is your fellow choir members or a full  concert crowd.

Learn and Grow in a Supportive Community

What makes us truly special is our community spirit. We’re not just about individual progress,  we’re about coming together to sing, support each other, and have a great time while doing  it. Our choirs are fun, friendly, welcoming and inclusive. Each session is informal so there is  no pressure if mistakes are made – this allows our singing to be free and the overall  experience more enjoyable.

Our choirs are open to everyone. There are no auditions, no need to read music, and no  pressure. It’s all about singing for the joy of it, in an environment where you can be yourself.  We believe that singing should be fun, and that’s exactly what you’ll find in our sessions:  laughter, energy, encouragement, and a genuine sense of belonging.

As you grow in confidence and ability, you’ll also have opportunities to take part in  performances, social events, and community projects that are all part of the Encore Choirs experience.

The Benefits Of Joining An Encore Choir

Singing has numerous benefits for our well being and has become an increasingly popular and enriching hobby. Numerous studies have shown that group singing has a range of benefits, including:

  • Mental Health Boost – Singing releases endorphins, which help reduce stress and anxiety. The communal aspect of our choir also provides a sense of belonging, which can be crucial for your mental well-being.
  • Physical Health Improvements – Singing engages the diaphragm and lungs, improving respiratory health and posture. Studies have shown that regular singing can even strengthen the immune system.
  • Increased Confidence – Performing in a group setting can enhance self-esteem and public speaking skills. Many members report feeling more comfortable using their voice in other areas of life, such as presentations or social interactions.
  • New Friendships – Being part of a choir fosters deep connections and friendships, helping to combat loneliness and social isolation. Many of our members find that the choir becomes a second family, providing support and encouragement beyond just the music.
  • Cognitive Benefits – Singing requires focus, memorisation, and coordination, all of which keep the brain active and engaged. Research suggests that singing can even help improve memory and cognitive function over time.

At Encore Choirs, we believe that singing should be fun, uplifting, and accessible to everyone. Each session is designed to be an energising and positive experience, leaving members feeling invigorated and inspired.
